这句话源自16世纪希腊谚语集 The Athenian Oracle（1703年）中的谚语"One man's meat is another man's poison"（一个人的肉是另一个人的毒药）。后演变成“One man's pleasure is another's pain”（一个人的欢乐是另一个人的痛苦）。18-19世纪的英国谚语中出现了“One man's trash is another man's treasure”这一条（见 Hector Urquhart's introduction to 1860's Popular Tales of the West Highlands），流传至今。
